Celebrating Sister Audrey, Our Founding Director
By: Debbie Lee, Board Member
Our beloved Sister Audrey Lindenfelser, SSND has retired as Executive Director of East Side Learning Center (ESLC).
To celebrate Sister Audrey and her accomplishments, ESLC is having a celebration in her honor. Mark Wednesday, May 24th from 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm on your calendar, when we will honor Sister Audrey and what she has given to our community. Invitations will arrive at the end of April. Want more information or to RSVP before then? Visit the event page on our website! Learn more vy visiting the Celebration Honoring Sister Audrey event page.
The vision for ESLC grew when, in 1998 as part of a long-range effort to revitalize the East Side of Saint Paul, the East Side Neighborhood Development Company approached the School Sisters of Notre Dame about helping to address unmet educational needs. In 2001 the Sisters partnered with Saint Paul civic and educational leaders to establish the East Side Learning Center, providing free one-on-one reading tutoring for children unable to get help elsewhere. The Sisters asked Sister Audrey to head up this new organization.
A few noted accomplishments under Sister Audrey’s leadership:
- In 2001 ESLC began with one staff member, Sister Audrey, at John A. Johnson Elementary. Today, 11 staff members, 30 part-time professional tutors and 170 volunteers provide tutoring at five schools.
- Sister Audrey initially recruited 25 volunteers. Currently, nearly 300 volunteers participate in our program annually.
- The first year ESLC tutored 19 children. This school year we are tutoring 450 students. Since inception we have tutored 2,411 children, giving 150,871 tutoring hours to our children!
Although Sister Audrey is retiring as Executive Director, she will continue working with ESLC as a site coordinator and tutor, returning to her passion of teaching.
To continue her legacy, ESLC is establishing the Sister Audrey Children’s Reading Fund. Donations to this fund will be dedicated to direct services to the students: one-on-one tutoring and tutoring materials. This will allow ESLC to deepen our services by increasing the number of children we serve and strengthening Youth Quality Program Assessment Goals (YQPA).
We hope you will be part of our celebration of Sister Audrey through attending the event, making a donation to the Sister Audrey Children’s Reading Fund, or both!
Your gift to the Sister Audrey Children's Reading Fund will be doubled through the generous support of the Katherine B. Andersen Fund of The Saint Paul Foundation.
Donations to the Sister Audrey Children’s Reading Fund can be mailed to East Side Learning Center at 740 York Ave, Saint Paul, MN 55106 with “In Honor of Sister Audrey” on the envelope. Alternatively, contributions to the fund can be made online at http://bit.ly/donatetoSrAudrey.
