What We Do

Programs

Our Programs

  • In-Person Program

Literacy Tutor Volunteers tutor K-3rd grade students at school. Volunteers work one-on-one with students 2-4 times each week during the school day, 30 minutes per session. Literacy Tutors tutor the same students from October through May and develop a close bond while improving their literacy skills.

  • Virtual After-School Program

Virtual Literacy Tutor volunteers tutor K-3rd grade students over Zoom during the late afternoon time period when students are home from school. Virtual Literacy Tutors work one-on-one with the same students from October through May and help them improve their literacy skills. Virtual Observers monitor sessions for the safety and comfort of tutors and students.

  • Summer Program

The East Side Learning Center (ESLC) four-week summer program is designed to help students in grades K-3 avoid the summer slide of reading skills for a three-hour session in the morning.
    The session consists of:
45 minutes of reading tutoring one-on-one
    45 minutes of Reader's Theater
45 minutes of active literacy games

East Side Learning Center Areas of Programming

  • Pre-Reader Program

Services are available for kindergarten and 1st grade children. The goal is to accelerate alphabet letter and sound growth and social-emotional growth, so children meet 1st grade readiness benchmarks. The literacy sessions incorporate repeated, supported practice of letter names, letter sounds, early high-frequency words, and oral language development.

  • Fluency Program

Services are available for 1st through 3rd grade children. The goal is to accelerate reading and social-emotional growth, so children meet school-identified reading goals. The literacy sessions incorporate oral reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language development.

  • Social Emotional Learning

The ESLC programs incorporate the five key principles of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into every mentoring session. The five principles are Self Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. Our literacy mentors are trained in the best practices of SEL teaching to ensure students learn, practice, and model essential personal life skills which contribute to their academic achievement, personal success, and positive outcomes after graduation.
